General information on grain drying

For drying moist grain nowadays, there is a large number of different options. Depending on the quantity of grain and weather conditions in the respective harvest year, a low to very high drying capacity may be necessary. With little precipitation and therefore a dry harvest, it is sometimes not necessary to dry at all or simple ventilation of the grain is sufficient. The situation is different if the grain with high moisture content has to be taken from the field. Stationary drying systems have established themselves on the market for high drying capacities.

The Horstkötter company became active in this field early on and developed and delivered the first dryer as early as 1959. In these more than 60 years of experience we have continuously improved our drying solutions.

Performance range

Depending on the customer’s wishes and performance requirements, we offer our grain dryers with a standard capacity of up to 50 t/h. Our drying plants are modularly designed so that larger quantities can be realised on request. The performance data refer to seed grain dried from 19% to 15% humidity (environmental conditions: 15°C outside temperature, 70% relative humidity). When drying corn, the performance specifications apply for a humidity decrease from of 35% to 15%.

Which dryer is the right one?

Basically, we distinguish between continuous, circulating and batch dryers. The basic structure of these types is similar. On the outside of the dryer there is a hot and a cold air shaft, which are connected by roof-shaped channels. The dryer is evenly filled with grain via a rotary distributor and the warm air is drawn through the material by a radial blower. Various heat sources can be used and combined as heat generators. The simplest variant for stationary drying is the TTS-Q batch dryer. It is filled once and dries the grain until the target moisture content is reached. In the TTS-QU rotary dryer, on the other hand, the material is set in motion by a discharge device so that the warm air can flow around it more easily. The target moisture content is therefore reached faster and more evenly. The continuous dryer TTS-QD represents the most powerful version of grain drying. Integrated in a complete grain plant, the continuous dryer is continuously filled with moist grain during continuous operation and the dry grain is then conveyed directly to the final storage facility.

Product overview: Continuous Flow Dryer

– Optimised air flow in the dryer
– Thermal insulation of the drying block
– Heat recovery of the dryer exhaust air
– Connection to renewable heat sources (biogas plants)
